Willem Van de Velde

I am a fan of stormy sea scenes with old sailing ships in them, so when I found the paintings of the Dutch artist Willem Van de Velde (1633-1707) at the Scottish National Gallery, I was quite happy.

He managed to capture the strength of the sea and the frightening atmosphere of the storms very effectively. He also painted some sea battle scenes and I was able to see some very cool drawings and sketches that were on display at the gallery.
