Johan Christian Dahl (1788 – 1857) was a Norwegian landscape artist considered the first great romantic painter in Norway and the founder of the golden age in his country.
I saw some of his sea paintings in the Scottish National Gallery in Edinburgh and thought they were beautiful. He shows the power of the ocean with all its dynamism and the atmosphere he creates with his lighting is very strong. His paintings suggest stories that the viewer can imagine when looking at them.
There are also some paintings of volcanoes in activity that look stunning with all the nature raging around them.
