Alphonse Mucha

This Czech artist’s work is gorgeous. Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939) was one of the most representative Art Nouveau artists of his time. He created a big number of artworks not only in painting and illustration but also on interior design, architecture and many other decorative arts. He believed, as well as other representatives of the Art Nouveau style, that everything we use in life should be beautiful and decorated as well as serving its purpose.

Being of Slavic ascendance, he was deeply in love with his cultural heritage, believing that the Slavs were the most beautiful and enlightened race of all. This he showed in his masterpiece “The Slav Epic” which is a series of big paintings depicting themes of Slavic mythology and can be found at the National Gallery’s Veletržní Palace.

I love his style, very decorated with a lot of movement, a beautiful and harmonious use of color and the quality of his rendering is what I would call delicious.
